You don’t get labeled the “Oracle of Omaha” for nothing.「『オマハの賢人』と呼ばれるのには理由がある」そうだ。
世界で最も成功した投資家のウォーレン・バフェット氏。現在95歳の同氏は、60年にわたってトップを務めた世界最大の投資会社、バークシャー・ハサウェイのCEOを退任する。
今回紹介するCNNの記事は、そんなバフェット氏の珠玉の名言を集めている。

｜投資とは「お金を失わないこと」
“The first rule in investment is don’t lose. And the second rule in investment is don’t forget the first rule.”「投資の第一のルールは『損をしないこと』。第二ルールは『第一のルールを忘れないこと』。」だそうだ。
当たり前のことだが、投資を「手段」でなく「目的」にしてしまうと、ついこの第一のルールを忘れがちになってしまう。ではどうすればいいのだろうか。

“If you buy things for far below what they’re worth and you buy a group of them, you basically don’t lose money,” he explained on Adam Smith’s Money World.「（株などの金融資産を）価値よりずっと安く買い、複数銘柄に分散すれば、基本的に損はしない。」シンプルかつ本質的なルールだ。
バフェット氏は「バリュー価値投資家」、つまり、割安だと考える企業を買って価値が高くなったところで売却する投資手法をとる。
今の日経平均なりアメリカのインデックス。「分散」ではあるが、果たして「割安」で購入していると言えるだろうか？

｜飽くまで「自分が判断」
“Figure out what is important and knowable.”「重要で、かつ知り得る（knowable）ことに集中せよ。」
バフェットは1998年の講演で「マクロ経済予測は投資判断に使わない」と語っている。
経済の見通しに無頓着で投資などできるだろうか？来年日銀がまた金利を上げる、他方でアメリカはまた金利を下げる、といった予測は投資判断に入らないということだろうか。

Certified financial planner Adam Grossman explains that to clients this way: “While the future direction of the economy is important, it isn’t knowable. For that reason, Buffett says, investors should avoid making forecasts and should definitely avoid listening to others’ forecasts.”「経済の先行きは重要だが、予測は不可能。だから他人の予測にも耳を貸すな」というのが真意らしい。
結局は、責任を取らない「他人」の予測は信用しないということだろう。予測は自分の頭で行い、予測できないくらいの頭なら投資なんかするな、という意味なのだろうか。

｜人生を先送りしない
“I said ‘30 and you already got all this stuff and you are still thinking about spending another couple years doing something you don’t really want to do because it will make your resume be even better?’ I said that sounds a little to me like saving up sex for your old age.”「履歴書を完璧にするためにやりたくない仕事を続けるのは、老後のためにセックスを取っておく（saving up sex for your old age）ようなものだ」とバフェット氏は語った。
相手は30歳のハーバードMBAの生徒で、既にCPA（公認会計士）を持っている者だったらしい。「既に全てを手に入れているのに、やりたくもない仕事に何年も費やすのか」と。

Buffett suggested that, to the extent possible, the students worry less about making a mint and more about doing work “for an organization or a person you really admire.”ではどうしろというのか。「お金儲けより、尊敬（admire）できる人や組織のために働け。」と賢人は言う。
「足るを知れ」という意味か、はたまた「本当にやりたいことができるように余裕をもて」という意味か。自分がこれを理解するにはもっと成熟が必要だ…

｜いち人間として…思いやりは無償
“Keep in mind that the cleaning lady is as much a human being as the chairman.”「清掃係も会長も同じ人間だと心に留めよ。」
“Decide what you would like your obituary to say and live the life to deserve it,” he recommended.「自分の死亡記事に何と書かれたいかを決め、その人生を生きよ」
市販のビジネス書で見たような言葉だが、もしかしたらバフェット氏が元なのかもしれない。結局、投資も人生も誠実でなければ長続きしない、ということだろうか。

“Greatness does not come about through accumulating great amounts of money, great amounts of publicity or great power in government,” he wrote.
“When you help someone in any of thousands of ways, you help the world. Kindness is costless but also priceless.
Whether you are religious or not, it’s hard to beat The Golden Rule as a guide to behavior.”
「偉大さは金や権力ではなく、他人を助けることから生まれる。親切は無料（kindness is costless）だが、無価値ではない（priceless）。」
この言葉が一番好きだ。案外というかほぼ間違いなく、一番富に執着していないのがバフェット氏なのかもしれない。
